Very Rare 7″ J.W. Harmon Iron Machinist LevelScalloped Sides • Full Working Vial • Attributed to J.W. Harmon of Boston • OAL 7.25″A very rare J.W. Harmon iron machinist level, measuring 7.25″ overall, and one of only a handful of known examples. This is an exceptional early form, distinguished by its scalloped sides—a feature seen on only about four examples in all the years I’ve handled and researched antique tools. The vial is full and working, a major plus on a level of this age and scarcity. As is typical for this pattern, the tool is unmarked, but these were clearly manufactured pieces and have long been attributed to J.W. Harmon of Boston, based on the research and documentation of Don Rosebrook. The form is outstanding—crisp lines, elegant scalloping, and a compact, dense feel that makes these early machinist levels so appealing. Rarely do they surface, and even more rarely in this condition.
