Superb Pair of Complex Molding Planes by John M. Taber — New Bedford
Single Boxed • Crisp Profiles • One Plane Marked “5” and the Other Marked “6” on the heel. widths of 2″ and 2 1/4″
A superb pair of complex molding planes by John M. Taber of New Bedford, one of the most admired New England makers of the 19th century. Taber’s planes are known for their refined proportions, tight boxing, and excellent working profiles—and this matched pair is a beautiful example of his craftsmanship.
Each plane is single boxed, with clean, tight boxing and crisp, well‑cut profiles. The bodies have excellent early color and strong surfaces. Importantly, one plane is marked “5” on the heel and the other is marked “6”, confirming them as a true working pair rather than two similar singles.
Matched Taber complex molders are not common, and finding them in this level of condition is a real bonus for collectors
