An extremely rare and exceptionally well‑preserved Solon Rust / Edward M. Chapin Patent Three‑Arm Plow Plane, marked No. 239 , produced by H. Chapin, Union Factory, Pine Meadow, Connecticut. This is one of the most distinctive and mechanically innovative plow planes ever made, representing the transition from traditional wooden plows to more complex patented designs.
The plane is clearly marked with the March 31, 1868 patent date, referencing the U.S. Patent issued jointly to Solon Rust, then head of plow‑plane production at Chapin, and Edward M. Chapin, owner of the Union Factory founded by Hermon Chapin. Early examples — including this one — follow the patent closely, featuring the characteristic three‑arm design and the early wooden center screw, just as illustrated in the original patent drawings.
This example remains in very fine condition, with crisp markings and excellent surfaces. There is a small chip at the front of the fence, easily re‑glued if desired Please see pictures.
