Great 18th‑Century Complex Molding Plane in the Style of Spicer
A superb 18th‑century complex molding plane, exhibiting the bold, confident chamfering and refined surface work associated with Spicer and early Jo. Fuller during his Connecticut period before relocating to Rhode Island. The plane has exceptional presence—crisp lines, deep profile, and the kind of honest, untouched patina that collectors prize in early American planes.
The N × H maker’s mark appears on the toe. This stamp has been documented on a small handful of early planes, and while the maker remains unidentified, it is widely believed to represent an undocumented Connecticut craftsman working in the late 18th century. The workmanship strongly supports that conclusion: careful chamfering, well‑cut escapement, and a profile executed with real skill.
A wonderful example of early Connecticut plane‑making, with strong stylistic ties to Spicer and Fuller and the added intrigue of an elusive maker’s mark.
