Awesome 18th-Century Highly Decorated Bill Hook – Machete-Type Axe/Knife, 15½” Long
Offered here is a spectacular 18th-century bill hook, forged in the machete-axe tradition, measuring 15½ inches in overall length. This piece is richly decorated with early ornamental detailing, showcasing the blacksmith’s artistry and elevating it far beyond a utilitarian edge tool.
The sweeping blade and hooked profile suggest it was originally intended for heavy brush clearing or agricultural use, but the high level of embellishment—likely hand-chiseled or filed—indicates it may have also served a ceremonial or status-related role. The balance and shaping are superb, and the surface patina is consistent with 18th-century forging techniques.
This piece comes from a prominent New York collector, known for curating exceptional early American and European edge tools. Whether displayed in a collection of early weaponry, agricultural implements, or folk art, this bill hook is a true showpiece—a rare blend of function, form, and historical intrigue.
