A 9″ Richardson sighting level with the 12″ top tube, a scarce and very distinctive early form from one of the classic New England makers. The top tube still retains its crosshair, and while there is no glass present, that may well be correct for this pattern—many Richardson sighting tubes were produced open‑ended, relying on the crosshair alone rather than a sealed lens. Surviving examples vary, so the absence of glass isn’t necessarily a defect.
The tube shows the normal toolbox dings you expect on a working 19th‑century sighting level, nothing that affects its structure or display appeal. The level vial is wet and working, which is a major plus on these, as many have long since dried out.
A clean, honest, and increasingly hard‑to‑find Richardson sighting level with its long tube intact and a functioning vial—full of period character and early surveying charm.
